Achievements

  • Was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering at the age of 32 years, to be among the youngest to hold such a post at that time

  • Was elected Dean, Faculty of Engineering at the age of 38 years, to be among the youngest to hold such a post at that time

  • Was appointed Vice Chancellor (Acting) at the age of 38 years and Vice Chancellor at the age of 43 years to be among the youngest to hold such a post at that time

  • Among the first Sri Lankans to hold a UN post in his own country in 1984 at a similar level of responsibility of that of a Chief Technical Advisor

  • Was elected President, Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka at the age of 48 to be among the youngest to hold such a post

  • Held the post of Vice-Chancellor for 3 terms in one University and was appointed Vice-Chancellor once again in another University in Sri Lanka for two terms for an unprecedented period of 15 years and in two Universities

  • Was able to build the University of Moratuwa up to a level of being ranked internationally as No. 1 in Sri Lanka and 10th in South Asia.

  • Elected to the position of Chairman, Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors on two occasions, which is perhaps unprecedented anywhere in the World

  • Appointed Chairman of Tetiary and Vocational Education Commission on two occassions
  • Every Executive President in Sri Lanka has made an appointment to 5 different respective Head of Institution positions
  • Achieved the highest position
    • in the academic sphere as a Senior Professor, Vice Chancellor and Chancellor
    • Professionally as the President in three professional bodies
    • Administratively in the Public Sector as a Secretary of a Ministry
    • National Project Co-ordinator in a UNDP / ILO Project and Local Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader on Donor Funded projects
    • Honorary President, Private Tertiary Education Institute
